Thousands of residents poured onto the streets of Kano on Saturday in a show of strong public support for Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, despite mounting political tension sparked by the recent defection of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The governor received a rousing welcome as his convoy moved from Aminu Kano International Airport through Kofar Wambai and Kwari, extending to the Government House axis. Supporters lined the roads for hours, waving party flags and chanting solidarity songs, creating a festive, carnival-like atmosphere across the city.

Eyewitnesses described the reception as one of the largest public mobilisations in recent times, highlighting the governor’s sustained grassroots support even as Kano’s political terrain undergoes significant realignment.
The development comes at a crucial moment in the state’s politics following Kwankwaso’s exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ADC—a move widely viewed as a strategic shift ahead of the 2027 general elections. As a dominant political figure and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, his defection has intensified political divisions across the state.
The situation has been further complicated by Governor Yusuf’s earlier move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2026, signaling a broader reshaping of political alliances in Kano.
Saturday’s massive turnout is being interpreted by analysts as a deliberate display of political strength by the governor and his supporters. Many residents who spoke with journalists said their participation reflected loyalty and confidence in Yusuf’s leadership.
“We are here to show that Kano people stand with their governor. Politics may change, but leadership is about service,” a youth leader in Gwale stated.
The crowd included traders, students, women groups, and party loyalists, all cheering as the convoy passed, while security personnel ensured order throughout the procession.
Observers say the unfolding developments point to an intensifying contest for political dominance among key blocs in Kano. While Kwankwaso’s defection has altered the state’s political equation, Saturday’s turnout suggests that Governor Yusuf continues to command significant support at the grassroots level.
With its large voter base and history of shaping national outcomes, Kano remains a critical battleground in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
