Grassroots Momentum Builds in Kebbi as Zuru Youths, Artisans Launch ‘35,000 Youth for Kaura’ Initiative

As political activities gradually gather pace ahead of future elections, political parties are intensifying efforts to consolidate support through endorsements, rallies and community engagement.

However, electoral victories are often shaped not by high-profile campaign events but by sustained grassroots mobilisation in communities where trust has been built over time.

Against this backdrop, the recent gathering of artisans and youths from the Zuru Emirate has attracted attention beyond its political symbolism.

The stakeholders publicly reaffirmed their support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and inaugurated the “35,000 Youth for Kaura” initiative, a movement they say is aimed at strengthening grassroots participation and expanding civic engagement across the emirate.

According to the organisers, the initiative has established representatives in every polling unit within the Zuru Emirate to coordinate community engagement, interact with families and opinion leaders, and deepen political participation at the grassroots level. They described the network as a strategic platform for mobilising support while encouraging greater involvement of young people in governance and democratic processes.

The organisers said the movement’s name reflects their appreciation of Governor Nasir Idris, popularly known as Kauran Gwandu, whose administration they credited with implementing policies and projects they believe have positively impacted the Zuru Emirate. They added that beyond political mobilisation, the association seeks to create a lasting structure through which youths can actively contribute to governance and public affairs.

The youths cited several projects undertaken by the state government as reasons for their support, including the reconstruction of the Zuru–Koko Road, the establishment of a Mobile Police Force barracks, and the construction of rural roads across the emirate. They argued that these projects have improved transportation, enhanced security and stimulated economic activities in the area.

They also commended Governor Idris for appointing young people into key positions within his administration, including commissioners, special advisers, directors and other senior government offices. According to them, the appointments demonstrate the administration’s commitment to youth inclusion and leadership development.

On security, the group praised the governor’s efforts to restore peace in parts of Kebbi South that had previously experienced insecurity. They attributed the relative stability in the area to increased government support for security agencies through funding, provision of operational equipment and sustained collaboration with security personnel.

Speaking during the event, the Commissioner for Information highlighted plans for a statewide sensitisation and public enlightenment campaign designed to promote public awareness and counter misinformation. He stressed the importance of verifying information through credible and official sources, noting that accurate information remains essential for strengthening public confidence and supporting good governance.

The development underscores the growing importance of grassroots political organisation in shaping democratic participation. While governments formulate policies and political parties articulate their programmes, community-based initiatives often play a significant role in connecting governance with the people at the local level.

Supporters of the “35,000 Youth for Kaura” initiative expressed confidence that the movement would strengthen the APC’s grassroots structure ahead of future elections. They maintained that Governor Nasir Idris’ focus on infrastructure, security, economic development and youth empowerment has continued to attract widespread support across Kebbi State.

Whether the initiative ultimately translates into electoral gains remains to be seen, but its emergence reflects the continuing influence of organised grassroots mobilisation in Kebbi’s political landscape.
