Troops of the Nigerian military have successfully repelled an attempted terrorist attack on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Mayanchi, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, preventing the attackers from breaching the facility and ensuring the security of the strategic Sokoto–Gusau highway.
The attempted assault reportedly occurred at about 5:05 p.m. on Friday, July 18, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who cited sources familiar with the operation.
The attackers, said to have arrived on motorcycles, launched an offensive against the military base in what appeared to be an effort to overrun the facility. Troops stationed at the base responded immediately, engaging the terrorists in a fierce gun battle.
As the attack unfolded, reinforcement troops from the Forward Operating Base in Fangaltama were swiftly deployed to support the defenders.
The combined response forced the assailants to abandon the operation and retreat without gaining access to the camp.
The successful defence of the base ensured that the Sokoto–Gusau Main Supply Route remained open and secure, preventing any disruption to military operations and civilian movement along the critical highway.
Security sources said the operation forms part of ongoing military efforts to sustain pressure on armed groups operating across Zamfara State, limit their freedom of movement, and strengthen security across Nigeria’s North-West region.
