Kano Offers Rehabilitation, Economic Support to Repentant Drug Users, Warns Traffickers of Tough Sanctions

The Chairman of the Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Barr. Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, has urged individuals battling drug abuse to embrace repentance, assuring them of the Kano State Government’s commitment to rehabilitate, reintegrate, and economically empower those willing to abandon the menace.

Speaking on Sunday at a Peace Building Programme organised by the Dorayi Ciranci Youth Development Initiative in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, Kano State Command, in Dorayi, Kano, Muhuyi said the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is adopting a balanced strategy that combines law enforcement with rehabilitation and empowerment to combat drug abuse across the state.

He explained that while the government remains resolute in prosecuting drug traffickers and other criminal elements, it is equally committed to giving repentant drug users a second chance to rebuild their lives.

“We are opening the door for repentance. Anyone who sincerely abandons drug abuse will be supported through rehabilitation and subsequently empowered to become self-reliant.

Our objective is not only to enforce the law but also to restore hope and dignity to those willing to change,” Muhuyi said.

The Task Force Chairman, however, issued a strong warning to individuals and property owners involved in the storage, distribution, or sale of illicit drugs, stating that the government would revoke the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) of any property found to be used for drug-related activities, in accordance with existing laws.

He stressed that the Task Force would discharge its responsibilities without fear or favour, maintaining that no individual, irrespective of political affiliation or social status, would be shielded from prosecution.

Muhuyi also cautioned politicians and influential persons against interfering in the operations of the Task Force or attempting to secure the release of suspects arrested for drug-related offences.

“The era of political interference is over.

We will not condone any attempt by politicians or influential persons to interfere with our operations or secure the release of suspects arrested in connection with drug-related offences.

The law will take its full course against anyone found wanting,” he declared.
Reaffirming the Task Force’s commitment to its mandate, Muhuyi said the agency would intensify intelligence-driven operations, public enlightenment campaigns, rehabilitation initiatives, and collaboration with security agencies and community stakeholders to rid Kano of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

He commended the organisers of the Peace Building Programme for promoting peace, youth development, and community engagement, describing such initiatives as essential to tackling the root causes of drug abuse, violence, and other social vices.

The chairman also appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, civil society organisations, and residents to support the Task Force by providing credible intelligence and strengthening community partnerships to build a safer, more secure, and drug-free Kano State.

Muhuyi attended the event alongside the Commandant of the Task Force and Officer Commanding (OC), Anti-Daba Unit of the Kano State Police Command, CSP Bashir Gwadabe.
