All is set for the Ekiti State governorship election scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026, as electoral officials, security agencies and political parties conclude final preparations across the state’s 16 local government areas.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has completed the distribution of both sensitive and non-sensitive election materials, while ad hoc personnel and electoral officers have undergone the required training to ensure a smooth electoral process.

The governorship poll is expected to witness significant voter turnout as residents head to the polls to elect a governor who will lead the state for the next four years.

A visit to Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, revealed heightened security around strategic locations, particularly the INEC headquarters, where election materials were being sorted and prepared for deployment to polling units across the state.

Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other sister agencies, have deployed personnel to maintain law and order before, during and after the election.

Speaking ahead of the poll, the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Bunmi Omoseyindemi, assured residents of adequate security arrangements, stressing that every necessary measure had been put in place to guarantee a peaceful and credible election.

He warned individuals and groups against any attempt to disrupt the electoral process, noting that security operatives would take decisive action against anyone found violating electoral laws.

Political parties have wrapped up their campaigns and intensified voter mobilisation efforts across communities, while party agents have been assigned to monitor activities at polling units and collation centres.

The election will feature candidates from 13 political parties cleared by INEC. Among the leading contenders is incumbent Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who is seeking re-election on the strength of his administration’s record in infrastructure development, education, healthcare, agriculture and social welfare.

Also in the race is Professor Oyebanji Ikusayedegbe Olajuyin of the Labour Party (LP), whose campaign has resonated strongly among young voters and professionals.

Ambassador Oluwadare Patrick Bejide of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is another prominent candidate, bringing extensive experience in public service and political administration.

Other parties participating in the election include the Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party, Action Democratic Party (ADP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Boot Party (BP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Young Progressives Party (YPP), and several others.

Residents across the state have expressed optimism about a peaceful exercise and urged political actors and their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly while respecting democratic principles.

Election observers and civil society organisations have also arrived in Ekiti State to monitor the process and provide independent assessments of the conduct of the election.

With all eyes on Ekiti, the governorship poll is expected to serve as another significant test of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the commitment of stakeholders to delivering a free, fair and credible electoral process.
