A group of aspirants of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kano State has rejected the outcome of the party’s purported State, National Assembly and State Assembly primary elections, alleging widespread irregularities and calling on the party’s national leadership to immediately investigate the process.
Addressing journalists at a press conference in Kano, spokesperson of the aggrieved aspirants and stakeholders, Hon. Wada Masu, described the primaries reportedly conducted on May 21, 2026, as lacking legitimacy, transparency and credibility.
“We are deeply dissatisfied with the conduct of the purported primary elections. The process, as presented to party members, raises serious questions about its legitimacy and compliance with the party’s constitutional guidelines,” Masu said.
According to him, the claim that valid primary elections were held on May 21 is questionable because all aspirants were undergoing a screening exercise on the same day.
“It is difficult to understand how primary elections could have been conducted while aspirants were still participating in the mandatory screening process. The two activities could not reasonably have taken place simultaneously in a manner that satisfies due process,” he stated.
The group further revealed that the party’s Elections Committee officially invited aspirants to a consensus meeting on May 22, 2026, a day after the alleged primaries.
“The invitation clearly stated that if the consensus arrangement failed, primary elections would subsequently be conducted. This directly contradicts the claim that legitimate primaries had already taken place on May 21,” Masu added.
The aggrieved aspirants argued that the sequence of events points to significant inconsistencies in the electoral process and undermines confidence in the credibility of the exercise.
“Such irregularities threaten internal democracy and could erode the trust and confidence of party members in the leadership and electoral process of the party,” he said.
The group described the alleged irregularities as a threat to fairness, justice and the rights of members to participate in a transparent and credible electoral process.
“Every aspirant deserves a level playing field and the opportunity to contest under conditions that comply with the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines.
Anything short of that undermines the principles of democracy,” the spokesperson noted.
Consequently, the aspirants called on the ADC national leadership, including the National Chairman, National Secretary, National Organising Secretary and other key officials, to intervene and provide what they described as a fair, lawful and lasting resolution.
“We urge the national leadership of our great party to thoroughly investigate these developments and ensure that justice is done. The integrity of the party and confidence of its members depend on it,” Masu said.
The group warned that failure to address the concerns could lead to further disenfranchisement of party members and trigger avoidable disputes ahead of future elections.
Despite their grievances, the aspirants stressed that their action was not targeted at any individual but aimed at protecting democratic principles and due process within the party.
“Our position is not against any person or group. We are only seeking to uphold transparency, fairness and the rule of law within the ADC,” he explained.
The aspirants reaffirmed their commitment to remaining law-abiding members of the party while pursuing redress through legitimate channels.
They expressed confidence that the national leadership would act swiftly to restore confidence in the electoral process and ensure that fairness prevails in the interest of the party, its members and Nigeria’s democratic system.
