The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening collaboration between the media and security agencies as part of broader efforts to protect democracy, promote national unity, and strengthen public trust.
Speaking at the ongoing National Security Summit of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abuja, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, conveyed the position of Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf on the crucial role of the media in nation-building and security management.
According to the governor, the media remains a strategic platform for communicating government policies and programmes to citizens, particularly the youth, while serving as a critical tool in the fight against fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.
“The media has the responsibility of informing the public about government activities while also protecting and preserving the integrity of the nation. This is part of our constitutional duty as citizens,” Waiya stated on behalf of Governor Yusuf.
The commissioner described the theme of the summit, which focuses on the relationship between security and media practice, as timely and forward-looking. He stressed that security-related issues require responsible and professional reporting that balances press freedom with national interest.
Waiya further revealed that the Kano State Government has maintained a strong working relationship with security agencies operating in the state, providing operational support such as vehicles and logistics to the Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Joint Task Force (JTF), and other security formations.
He also assured stakeholders that both public and private media organisations in Kano operate in a conducive environment free from intimidation or harassment.
According to him, the government regularly organises training and capacity-building programmes to enhance journalists’ professionalism and effectiveness.
“We are creating a nexus between the media, security agencies, and government. By supporting security agencies, we are not only assisting them in their duties but also protecting ourselves as citizens,” he said.
The commissioner reiterated Kano State’s commitment to upholding constitutional values, protecting press freedom, and promoting inclusive governance.
He noted that sustained cooperation between the media and security agencies remains essential for ensuring peace, stability, and sustainable development across the country.
