Zamfara Health Delegation Visits Kano to Study Sustainable Drug Supply Model

A high-level delegation from the Zamfara State Ministry of Health has undertaken a strategic study tour to the Kano State Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency (DMCSA), in a bid to strengthen drug supply systems and improve healthcare delivery in the state.

The delegation, led by the Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Rilwanu Musa Zurmi, is focusing on understanding Kano’s Drug Revolving Fund (DRF) model widely regarded as a sustainable approach to ensuring the consistent availability of essential medicines.

The visit highlights Zamfara State’s commitment to adopting best practices in pharmaceutical supply chain management to enhance efficiency and long-term sustainability.
Receiving the team on behalf of the Director General of DMCSA, Pharm. Gali Sule, the Director of Pharmaceutical Services at the Kano State Ministry of Health, Pharm. Kamilu Mudi Salisu, welcomed the delegation and reaffirmed Kano’s readiness to share its expertise.

“We are open to collaboration and knowledge sharing that will strengthen healthcare systems across states,” Salisu said, noting that Kano’s DRF model has continued to deliver positive results in drug availability and accountability.

Also speaking, the Director of Drugs and Supply at DMCSA, Pharm. Salisu Hashim, alongside the Technical Assistant, Pharm. Tukur Ibrahim, assured the visitors of Kano’s willingness to build a strong partnership with Zamfara State for improved healthcare outcomes.

They emphasized that the study tour would provide practical insights into Kano’s drug financing system, enabling Zamfara to adapt and implement similar strategies.

In his remarks, Alhaji Rilwanu Musa Zurmi explained that the tour was designed to give the delegation firsthand exposure to the operational framework and success factors behind Kano’s achievements in drug supply chain management.

Similarly, the Executive Secretary of the Zamfara State Drugs Management Agency (DMA), Pharm. Sani Bello, expressed optimism about the impact of the visit.

“We are here to understudy best practices in DRF management and explore innovative supply chain solutions that can be replicated in Zamfara,” he said.

The delegation also includes key stakeholders such as the Chairman of the DMA Governing Board, Pharm. Isa Muhammad Gusau; the Executive Secretary of the Hospitals Management Board, Almustapha Marafa; Technical Assistant to the DMA Executive Secretary, Pharm. Nasiru Muhammad Jabaka; and Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Lawali Mohammed Altine.

During the visit, the team engaged in technical sessions, facility inspections, and interactive discussions covering DRF operations, stock management, financing mechanisms, and accountability systems.

Kano State’s DMCSA has earned national recognition for its innovative strategies in ensuring the steady supply of quality medicines, making it a benchmark for states seeking to reform their drug distribution systems.

The study tour is expected to deepen inter-state collaboration and drive significant improvements in access to essential medicines in Zamfara State and beyond.
