Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State has successfully conducted a large-scale livestock vaccination campaign, providing free veterinary services to herders across key communities.
The exercise, which covered Baso Dantsinke settlement, Idris Abubakar settlement, and Muhammad Loga area in Unguwa Uku ‘Yan Awaki, targeted major cattle diseases, including Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), as well as treatments for cough, flu, and other common ailments affecting livestock.
Speaking on the initiative, the Head of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Department in Tarauni LGA, Ado B. Dahiru, revealed that no fewer than 7,213 cattle were vaccinated during the outreach. He described the exercise as a significant step toward safeguarding livestock health and improving productivity in the area.
Dahiru explained that the campaign was part of the ongoing efforts of the Executive Chairman of Tarauni LGA, Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Muhammad Sekure, in collaboration with the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. According to him, the initiative aims to curb the spread of infectious diseases, minimize economic losses among herders, and strengthen the livestock value chain.
The veterinary team leader, Dr. Hanga, emphasized the importance of routine vaccination, noting that diseases such as flu can spread rapidly, particularly during certain seasons. He added that beyond treatment, the team also educated herders on best practices in animal health management to ensure long-term benefits.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment, the Executive Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Muhammad Sekure, stated that people-oriented programs—especially in agriculture and livestock—remain a top priority. He noted that improving animal health directly contributes to food security and economic stability in the local government.
He also commended the Kano State Government for its consistent support in implementing developmental initiatives across the state.
Beneficiaries of the program expressed appreciation to the local authorities for bringing free veterinary services closer to their communities, describing the intervention as timely and impactful.
Similarly, the Director of Personnel Management of the local government, Alhaji Tijjani Madaki Gulya, lauded the state government’s commitment to promoting animal health and supporting rural livelihoods.
