The Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development has commenced preparations for a statewide Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) mass vaccination campaign with the training of veterinary personnel and the introduction of a digital vaccination data management system.
The one-day state-level training, held at the Murtala Muhammad Library in Kano, brought together officers from the Ministry’s Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology as well as the Department of Animal Health.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu, the Director of Administration and General Services called on participants to demonstrate commitment and professionalism throughout the vaccination exercise.
He noted that the Ministry was established by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to modernize livestock production and transform the sector into a more productive and economically viable industry.
The Director emphasized the importance of accurate data collection and proper record-keeping during the vaccination campaign, stressing that participants must ensure comprehensive documentation of animals vaccinated against PPR across their assigned locations.
The training featured two key sessions. The first focused on PPR disease control and data management, with a presentation delivered by Dr. Mubashir Mustapha.
The second session centered on the use of the Ministry’s newly developed vaccination management software, designed to enable real-time data collection and monitoring of vaccination activities.
The session was facilitated by data management specialist, Malam Aminu.In a related development, E-Health Africa, a non-governmental organization, participated in the programme and introduced an innovative vaccine transport carrier for the safe storage and transportation of animal vaccines.
According to the organization, the device will help maintain vaccine potency during field operations and ensure effective delivery to target communities.E-Health Africa also expressed its readiness to partner with the Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development in advancing the state’s livestock development agenda and strengthening animal health interventions.
Participants at the training commended the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu, for his commitment to improving livestock data management and driving the modernization of the livestock sector in Kano State.
The mass vaccination campaign is expected to enhance animal health services, reduce livestock disease outbreaks, and boost productivity across the state’s livestock value chain.
