The Glaucoma Association of Kano has strengthened its leadership structure with the election of new executive members to drive its mission of reducing the growing burden of glaucoma across the state.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to raising public awareness about the signs and symptoms of glaucoma — one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness — and ensuring that vulnerable patients receive treatment at highly subsidised rates. It highlighted that the high cost of managing the disease remains a major barrier for many residents, making its intervention vital in preventing avoidable vision loss.
Speaking after the election, the newly elected Chairman, Dr. Sadik Hassan, urged the government and relevant stakeholders to prioritise the welfare of glaucoma patients by improving access to quality eye care services.
Dr. Hassan called on the Kano State Government to establish a dedicated eye hospital with a specialised glaucoma centre, noting that such a facility would ease the burden on affected residents, promote early detection, and improve treatment outcomes. He stressed that timely intervention could save many from the devastating impact of preventable blindness.
