The Kano State Police Command has launched a specialized Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) as part of renewed efforts to tackle violent crimes and improve security across the state.
Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, announced the initiative during the official inauguration ceremony, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening public safety and building safer communities in Kano.
Bakori said the unit, established on April 24, 2026, was created in line with directives from the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to enhance intelligence-led policing and boost operational efficiency.
According to the police commissioner, the VCRU is a highly specialized tactical team designed to combat armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes threatening lives, property and economic activities in the state.
He explained that the unit would focus on rapid response to violent incidents, proactive crime prevention operations, and thorough investigation and prosecution of criminal suspects.
“Our goal is simple: to reduce response time, dominate public spaces and deny criminals the freedom to operate within Kano State,” Bakori stated.
The commissioner noted that officers deployed to the unit were carefully selected and subjected to intensive screening and specialized training in tactical operations, intelligence gathering, human rights and professional conduct in line with global best practices.
He emphasized that discipline, integrity and respect for human rights would remain central to the operations of the VCRU.
Bakori further assured residents that the police command would be fully accountable for the conduct and performance of the unit, adding that the initiative aligns with ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening intelligence-based policing and improving community relations.
He disclosed that the VCRU would rely heavily on real-time intelligence, data analysis and credible information from members of the public to effectively carry out its operations.
The commissioner therefore urged residents to support security agencies with useful information that could help prevent and detect crimes.
To promote transparency and accountability, the Kano State Police Command also inaugurated a Civilian Oversight Board for the unit.
The board comprises representatives of civil society organisations, traditional institutions, legal practitioners and community leaders, and is expected to enhance public trust and encourage inclusive policing.
The launch ceremony was attended by senior police officers, community stakeholders and residents, many of whom described the initiative as a positive move toward addressing security challenges in Kano State.
