More than 200 serving and former members of the Kano State House of Assembly have formally endorsed the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, as their preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Kano State.
The endorsement was announced in a statement issued by Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy President of the Senate. According to the statement, the lawmakers—spanning legislative sets from 1999 to date—were led by a former Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulaziz G. Gafasa, during a courtesy visit to Senator Barau.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Gafasa described Senator Barau as “the most marketable candidate” for the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that his influence and developmental projects cut across the three senatorial districts of the state. He emphasized that Barau’s contributions to the party and his support to individuals beyond his constituency make him widely acceptable.
A serving member of the Assembly, Hon. Garba Yau Gwarmai of Ghari/Tsanyawa Constituency, also pledged the group’s commitment to mobilising grassroots support for Senator Barau ahead of 2027. He said the endorsement stems from Barau’s “track record of outstanding service and positive impact on the lives of Kano citizens.”
Although Senator Barau—who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament—has not officially declared his ambition to run for governor, several APC stakeholders in Kano have continued to rally behind him, citing his decade-long performance in the National Assembly.
In his response, Senator Barau expressed gratitude for the show of confidence, urging the lawmakers to remain committed to promoting the ideals of the APC and the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He added that collective effort is needed to “rescue and restore the glorious days of Kano State.”
He called on all stakeholders to work together, stressing the importance of unity and sacrifice in safeguarding the future of the state.
