PDP Affirms Muhammad Sani Abacha as Kano Governorship Candidate for 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State has affirmed Muhammad Sani Abacha as its governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections following the voluntary withdrawal of the party’s earlier candidate, Muhammad Bello Dalhatu.

The decision was reached at an expanded State Executive Committee meeting held in Kano on Wednesday, where the party also conducted a replacement primary election.

The state PDP Chairman, Dr Bello Gambo Bichi, said the exercise was conducted in accordance with the party’s constitution and relevant electoral laws.

Bichi explained that Dalhatu, who emerged as the party’s candidate in an earlier primary, voluntarily withdrew from the race following consultations among party stakeholders in Kano and Abuja.

«“Last time, we conducted a primary election in which Muhammad Bello Dalhatu was declared the winner, but following consultations among stakeholders in Kano and Abuja, the candidate decided to withdraw.»

«“The law says that following a withdrawal, a replacement primary must be conducted. That is what brought us here today,” he said.»

Following the replacement primary held on September 16, Abacha was affirmed as the party’s governorship candidate.

The Chairman of the electoral panel, Dr Abba Abdullahi, declared Abacha the winner of the exercise, saying he had met the requirements for nomination under the party’s guidelines and relevant electoral regulations.

PDP Names Deputy Governorship Candidate

The party also announced Alhaji Yusuf Ado Kibiya, a former factional PDP chairman and former Commissioner for Land and Agriculture, as its deputy governorship candidate.

Bichi said the decision followed extensive consultations and reconciliation efforts among the various factions within the Kano PDP.

“After wide consultations and reconciliation, we agreed to give the deputy governorship slot to the Turaki faction here in Kano.

“With this, there is no faction in Kano PDP. We have reconciled,” Bichi said.

He added that representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) witnessed the replacement primary and affirmation process.

The party chairman further disclosed that some of its National Assembly and State Assembly candidates had also been replaced as part of the reconciliation arrangements.

According to Bichi, the reconciliation has restored unity within the Kano PDP, while the party would now focus on strengthening its structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He said the emergence of Abacha and the reconciliation of the party’s factions would enable the PDP to consolidate its support across Kano State.
