A.A.Yari: The Pragmatic Political Strategist for Tinubu’s 2027 Campaign

Presidential elections are rarely won by the candidate alone. Behind every successful presidential campaign is a political organisation capable of translating goodwill into votes, managing competing interests, mobilising structures, communicating a coherent message and sustaining a broad coalition until election day. With the 2027 general elections approaching, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a significant step by formally appointing Senator Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari as Director-General of its Presidential Campaign Council for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid. The appointment has already attracted commendation from political and civic groups, with Transparency Watch describing it as well deserved and expressing confidence in Yari’s experience and capacity to deliver on the assignment.

For those who have followed Yari’s political career, his emergence should hardly come as a surprise. The appointment places at the centre of the 2027 campaign a politician whose experience spans party organisation, legislative politics, executive governance, national political negotiation and grassroots mobilisation. Yari began his political career in 1999 as Secretary of the then All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), later became Chairman of the ANPP in Zamfara State and subsequently served as the party’s National Financial Secretary. In 2007, he entered the House of Representatives representing Anka/Talata Mafara Federal Constituency before becoming Governor of Zamfara State in 2011. He was re-elected in 2015 on the platform of the APC. This progression has given him an understanding of Nigerian politics from the party structure and constituency level to the highest levels of executive and legislative government.

Perhaps one of the strongest credentials Yari brings to the new assignment is his experience as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum. In 2015, his fellow governors elected him to lead an organisation bringing together the governors of Nigeria’s 36 states. The responsibility required diplomacy, negotiation and the ability to manage different political interests while pursuing common objectives. Those qualities are particularly relevant to a presidential campaign, which must coordinate governors, legislators, party leaders, political groups, community structures, traditional institutions, women and youth organisations and grassroots actors across the country.

A presidential campaign director-general must therefore be more than a mobiliser. He must be a political manager capable of building bridges, resolving disagreements and keeping diverse interests focused on a common objective. Yari’s experience in the Governors’ Forum gave him considerable exposure to this kind of political coordination. His return to the Senate has further placed him at the centre of national political decision-making. He currently represents Zamfara West in the National Assembly and chairs the Senate Committee on Water Resources and Sanitation. His experience in both executive and legislative positions gives him a broad understanding of the relationship between governance, public policy and electoral politics.

The grassroots dimension of Yari’s political career is equally significant. Nigerian presidential elections may be coordinated nationally, but their outcome is ultimately determined across states, local government areas, wards and polling units. Political relationships, local structures and community concerns remain central to electoral mobilisation. Yari’s experience as a constituency representative, two-term governor and senator has exposed him repeatedly to the realities of competitive elections and grassroots politics. He understands that national political narratives must eventually translate into local organisation and voter engagement.

His political journey has also been marked by periods of adversity. The 2019 Zamfara political crisis, which culminated in the Supreme Court nullifying the electoral victories of APC candidates in the state over issues concerning the party’s primaries, was a major setback. Yet Yari remained active in national politics and subsequently returned to the National Assembly. Such political resilience is relevant to a campaign leadership position because presidential contests inevitably involve disagreements, rival interests, defections, controversies and unexpected developments. Experience in navigating difficult political circumstances can be an important asset when the stakes are national.

Another quality that makes Yari relevant to the assignment is his capacity for consensus-building. His political style has often been associated with negotiation and engagement rather than unnecessary confrontation. This is particularly important in a campaign as broad as the APC’s 2027 presidential effort. A successful national campaign cannot be built around one region or one political constituency. It must create a coalition capable of reaching Nigerians across geopolitical zones, generations and socioeconomic groups. The ability to listen, negotiate and accommodate legitimate differences will therefore be essential to the campaign’s success.

The commendation from Transparency Watch reinforces this perception. The organisation, which said it had observed Yari’s activities as governor and senator, described his appointment as well deserved, citing his dedication, hard work and commitment to governance and party politics. It also described the appointment as an expression of President Tinubu’s confidence in Yari and argued that his political experience, exposure and networks make him suitable for the demanding responsibility.

The significance of the appointment, however, goes beyond the praise surrounding it. Yari now has the responsibility of transforming his political experience into an effective national campaign structure. The 2027 electorate is more connected, more politically aware and increasingly demanding. Younger Nigerians in particular are consuming political information through digital platforms and judging governments through their personal economic and social experiences.

Consequently, the campaign cannot rely solely on rallies, posters and traditional political mobilisation. It will require data-driven strategy, effective digital communication, youth engagement, rapid-response mechanisms, professional polling and constituency-specific messaging.

Yari’s role will therefore be to provide political direction and coordination while working with a professional team capable of delivering the technical and communications dimensions of a modern campaign. His extensive political networks can provide the organisational foundation, but those networks must be converted into a disciplined structure capable of reaching voters and communicating the administration’s record and future agenda effectively.

His educational development also complements his practical political experience. His profile records a Leadership and Change certificate from the London School of Economics in 2023 and an MSc in Finance and Investment Management from the University of Salford in 2025. While academic qualifications do not win elections, they add another dimension to the experience he brings to a complex national assignment.

Ultimately, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari’s appointment represents a recognition of the value of political experience, organisational capacity and coalition-building in a presidential contest. From party secretary to party chairman, national party officer to federal lawmaker, governor to Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and subsequently senator, he has operated at multiple levels of Nigerian politics. That breadth of experience is now being placed at the service of the APC’s 2027 presidential campaign.

Senator Yari has now been given that responsibility. The commendations that have greeted his appointment reflect the confidence that some political and civic groups have placed in his ability to deliver.

The real test, however, will be translating decades of political experience into an organised, inclusive and effective campaign capable of taking President Tinubu’s message to every part of Nigeria. For Senator Yari, the appointment is not simply a political recognition; it is a demanding national assignment. The work has begun, and the 2027 election will ultimately provide the measure of his stewardship.
