The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Monday hosted the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, and his delegation with a colourful mini durbar at the Emir’s Palace in Kano.

The event showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Kano Emirate and underscored the city’s historic significance as a centre of commerce, culture and civilisation in West Africa.

Speaking during the ceremony, Emir Sanusi urged the European Union to expand its support for Kano State and Nigeria in key sectors, including security, healthcare and education, with particular focus on advancing girl-child education.

He highlighted Kano’s long-standing role in regional trade and cultural preservation, noting that the emirate’s prominence dates back to the era of trans-Saharan commerce.

The emir also stressed the importance of stronger international partnerships in tackling the security challenges facing the country, particularly in Nigeria’s North-West region.

According to him, enhanced support for security initiatives would help restore peace and stability in communities affected by insecurity.

Sanusi further emphasised the need for sustained investment in healthcare and education, describing both sectors as critical to sustainable development and social progress.

He recalled that the Kano Durbar was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2024, adding that the cultural spectacle remains one of the emirate’s cherished traditions for welcoming distinguished guests.

Earlier, EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot said the visit was part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between the European Union and Northern Nigeria in areas of mutual interest and development.

He reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting programmes aimed at improving education, healthcare delivery and security across the region.

Mignot also praised Kano’s rich cultural heritage and expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded to him and members of his delegation.

The mini durbar featured horsemen dressed in colourful traditional regalia alongside other cultural performances, attracting palace officials, community leaders and dignitaries who gathered to welcome the visiting delegation.
