Friends, colleagues, and associates will converge in Abuja on April 29, 2026, to honour the life and legacy of the late Comrade Abubakar Sokoto Mohammed, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s progressive intellectual and social justice movements.
The memorial event is being organised to celebrate the contributions of Comrade Mohammed, who passed away on December 11, 2025, and is remembered as a committed patriot and advocate for societal transformation.
Throughout his distinguished career, he served in key academic and policy institutions, including Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), and Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS). He was widely respected for his unwavering stance on academic freedom, gender equality, and Africa’s development.
According to the organisers, the event “is aimed at reflecting on his decades of struggle and intellectual contributions to nation-building and social justice.”
The programme will feature a symposium themed “Scholars and the Social Question in Nigeria: Reflections on the Life of A.S. Mohammed,” chaired by Senator Dr. Yahaya Abdullahi, with notable scholars such as Dr. Yusuf Bangura, Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim, Prof. Aliyah Adamu Ahmad, and Dr. Julie Sanda expected to speak.
A major highlight of the event will be the launch of his book titled “The Satiru Revolt of Peasants and Slaves in Sokoto, 1906.” The session will be chaired by former Sokoto State Governor, Malam Yahaya Abdulkarim, while Prof. M. J. Kuna will review the publication.
Proceeds from the book launch will go towards an endowment fund set up to support his family and sustain the causes he championed.
A biographical tribute to the late intellectual, described as a “crusader for the common good,” will also be presented by Dr. J. Maina.
The event will take place at BON Elvis Hotel, Wuse 2, Abuja, beginning at 9:00 a.m., and is open to the public, including members of academia, civil society, labour organisations, and the media.
