The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and the National Population Commission (NPC) have partnered with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and stakeholders from 44 local government areas in Kano State to intensify efforts toward increasing birth registration awareness at the grassroots level.
The collaboration was highlighted by the Kano State Director of NOA, Alhaji Nura Liman, during a one-day sensitization meeting held at the Gwale Local Government Islamic Centre Hall. The meeting focused on the implementation of social mobilization strategies aimed at improving birth certificate registration across communities in the state.
In a statement issued to the press by the Kano Municipal Zonal Information Officer, Abdullahi Musa Gyadi Gyadi, Alhaji Nura Liman commended UNICEF and the NPC for their commitment to ensuring that every child under one year of age is properly registered at birth. He noted that the partnership reflects a shared dedication to improving data accuracy, child welfare, and access to essential services through effective birth registration systems.
The NOA State Director further urged all participants to actively contribute to the campaign by sensitizing their communities about the importance of birth registration. He emphasized that collective responsibility and community engagement are crucial for the success of the initiative.
Speaking on the objectives of the meeting, the NOA Head of Media and Communication, Hajiya Hauwa Adamu Garba, elaborated on the ongoing sensitization campaign. She called on stakeholders to design and implement strategic approaches that would strengthen community awareness and participation in birth registration. According to her, proper documentation ensures every child’s inclusion in the national identity system and enhances their access to education, healthcare, and other social services.
Representatives from the National Population Commission (NPC) and the National Identity Management Agency (NIMC)—Alhaji Mahmud Rabi’u and Alhaji Umar Abdullahi respectively—underscored the critical importance of early birth registration. They explained that accurate records of births serve as a foundation for effective planning, policy formulation, and the implementation of child welfare programmes nationwide.
The officials also commended traditional and community leaders from Municipal, Gwale, Dala, and Fagge Local Government Areas for their continuous support and unwavering commitment to promoting child rights and community development.
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants were divided into groups based on their respective local government areas. Each group presented detailed strategies aimed at ensuring a smooth and effective mobilization exercise in their communities.
