By Editor The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its nationwide strike following what it described as significant progress in negotiations with the Federal Government.
ASUU President, Dr. Christopher Piwuna, announced the suspension on Wednesday at the union’s national secretariat, University of Abuja.
Dr. Piwuna said the decision came after fruitful discussions with government representatives on lingering issues affecting university education and the welfare of lecturers.
“NEC hopes that the government will take advantage of this suspension to fully resolve all outstanding matters, especially the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement. Should the government fail to do so, ASUU will not hesitate to resume the strike,” he cautioned.
The ASUU president emphasized that the industrial action could have been avoided if the Federal Government had addressed the union’s demands earlier.
He outlined ASUU’s key demands, which include the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement, sustainable funding and revitalisation of public universities, an end to the alleged victimisation of members at LASU, Prince Abubakar Audu University, and FUTO, as well as payment of outstanding 25–35% salary arrears, settlement of four-year promotion arrears, and remittance of withheld third-party deductions.
