Th National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult And Non – Formal Education Commission ( NMEC) , has presented vocational skill acquisition and material / equipment using literacy through economic empowerment in Kaduna State.
Speaking during the North West Flag-Off ceremony, in kaduna the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non- Formal Education, Professor Garba Maitafsir said that the commission had empowered over 100 individuals across the six geographic zones of Nigeria.
He said that they were celebrating the achievements of young adults and women who had successfully completed a transformation journey that combined literacy education with vocational skills acquisition in the areas of beauty cosmetology, fashion design, home economics, barbing and hairdressing.
According to him, the initiative implemented through the State Agencies for Adults and Non Formal Education in the North West zone is a direct expression of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government.
Maitafsir said that those intervention had provided beneficiaries with both literacy and livelihood skills, reinforcing the commitment to national Development through education and urged the beneficiaries to extend the impact of the program to their communities”.
He called on the beneficiaries to be good ambassadors of literacy and enterprise body.
In her remarks , the Director of Vocational and Continuing Education, Mrs Ejieji Nnenna Jane said that the programme was aimed at empowering learners who had acquired skills in various field.
According to her, everybody is a winner as every participant in attendance would be going home with a vocational equipment irrespective of their position in the competition.
She enjoined the learners to make judicious use of the materials and equipment, reminding them that they were not meant to sold in market just as she encouraged the participants to teach others so that Nigeria can be a better country in terms of skill acquisition.
In her welcome address, the Director and the State Coordinator, Agency for Mass Education, Kaduna State, Nafisa Bello said that literacy economic empowerment strategy initiative had already laid a great foundation on the first phase of equipping learners not only with ability to read and write but also with practice skills for sustainable livelihood.
She explained that the second phase was in consolidation stage to expand access so as
deepen impact and ensuring that literacy and economic empowerment moved hand in hand in the north west zone .
Bello said that empowerment had transformed individuals’ skills, especially women,youth and children to break the roof circle of poverty and contribute meaningfully to the growth of their families, societies, communities and the nation at large.
Speaking on behalf of beneficiaries, Nafisa Yusuf from katsina State expressed gratitude to the commission and promised to make judicious use of the equipments.
Equipment distributed were local oven, industrial sewing machine, clippers , cooker pot, cylinders, milling machine and set of dishes.
