Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed the Ministry of Water Resources to immediately regulate the activities of sand miners operating around water treatment plants across the state, as part of efforts to protect critical infrastructure and improve water supply.
The directive was issued during the governor’s inspection visit to the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area. The visit forms part of his ongoing statewide tour of water facilities aimed at assessing their condition and ensuring optimal performance.
In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mustapha Muhammad, the governor expressed concern over the growing activities of sand miners in close proximity to water treatment plants, warning that such practices pose serious risks to the sustainability of water supply systems.

Governor Yusuf noted that unchecked sand mining could damage vital infrastructure and disrupt the effective production and distribution of potable water to residents across Kano State.
“Unregulated sand mining around these facilities is a serious threat to their functionality and could undermine the huge investments made by the government to ապահով reliable water supply,” the governor stated.
He emphasized the need for strict monitoring and enforcement of existing regulations, urging the Ministry of Water Resources and other relevant agencies to take decisive action in curbing the activities.
“We must ensure that all activities around our water sources are properly regulated.
Protecting these facilities is essential to maintaining access to clean and safe drinking water for our people,” he added.
Governor Yusuf further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving water infrastructure and ensuring sustainable access to potable water across the state.
He also called on stakeholders, including local communities and operators, to cooperate with the government in safeguarding public utilities, stressing that collective responsibility is key to achieving lasting solutions.
The move is part of broader efforts by the Kano State Government to address challenges affecting water supply and to strengthen systems that support public health and development.
The ongoing inspection tour is expected to provide further insights into challenges facing water facilities and guide policy decisions aimed at delivering efficient and reliable water services to residents.
