The Transport Unit of Dangote Cement Plc has launched a large-scale tree planting initiative in Obajana, Kogi State, as part of activities marking the 2026 International Day of Forests.
The exercise, which saw the planting of hundreds of trees and the distribution of seedlings to 13 schools, underscores the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action.
Speaking at the event, Divisional Director Transport, Col. Hemant Rana (Rtd), represented by Assistant Divisional Director, Mr. Abdullahi Aliyu, highlighted the critical role forests play in sustaining life and protecting the environment. He noted that forests help regulate climate, support biodiversity, and provide essential resources for human survival.
According to him, the initiative goes beyond symbolic planting, serving as a platform to educate communities and inspire collective responsibility in combating deforestation and environmental degradation. He added that engaging schools in the programme is aimed at instilling a culture of environmental stewardship among young people.
Also speaking, Sustainability Lead of Dangote Cement Transport Nigeria, Mr. Olumide Balogun, described forests as vital life-support systems that regulate rainfall, improve air quality, prevent soil erosion, and provide habitats for numerous species.
He urged stakeholders, particularly host communities and schools, to take ownership of the planted trees to ensure they grow to maturity and deliver long-term environmental benefits.
“As we mark this year’s International Day of Forests, we are renewing our commitment to expand this initiative by planting more trees and working closely with our communities to ensure their survival and impact,” he said.
In his remarks, Human Resources and Admin Manager at the Transport’s Post Trip Inspection Unit, Mr. Marcos-Akuso Daniel, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to strengthening community participation and promoting responsible corporate citizenship.
The 2026 International Day of Forests, themed “Forests and Economies,” highlights the role of forests in supporting livelihoods, creating jobs, and enhancing economic resilience worldwide.
