The Kano State Government has taken a significant step toward strengthening environmental protection and forest surveillance with the distribution of motorcycles to frontline forest officers across six zonal forest areas in the state.
The initiative, carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, is aimed at enhancing mobility, response time, and effective monitoring of forest reserves to curb illegal activities and promote sustainable environmental management.
The motorcycles were formally presented to zonal forest officers representing Danbatta, Kano, Wudil, Gwarzo, Bichi and Tudun Wada. The presentation was conducted by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Barrister Mustapha Nuraddeen Muhammad, on behalf of the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim.
He conveyed the commissioner’s commitment to improving the operational capacity of officers charged with protecting the state’s forest resources.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Hashim urged the beneficiaries to demonstrate renewed dedication, professionalism, and accountability in the discharge of their duties.
He emphasized that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, remains resolute in creating a conducive working environment for environmental officers, noting that effective forest protection is critical to combating deforestation, desertification, and climate change impacts in Kano State.
Earlier, the Director of Forestry in the ministry, Malam Auwalu Muhammad, highlighted the long-standing challenges faced by forestry personnel, revealing that for more than two decades officers had operated with minimal logistical support and inadequate working tools.
He described the motorcycle distribution as a landmark intervention by the present administration, designed to address mobility constraints and improve access to remote forest reserves where monitoring has often been difficult.
According to him, the provision of motorcycles reflects the government’s broader commitment to revitalizing the forestry sector and ensuring that environmental officers are well-equipped to enforce regulations, protect forest resources, and support community-based conservation efforts across the state.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Murtala Sabo Kachako expressed gratitude to the Kano State Government and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change for what he described as a timely and impactful intervention.
He assured that the officers would utilize the motorcycles responsibly and intensify efforts to safeguard forest reserves in line with government expectations.
