The British Government has congratulated Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, following the state’s emergence as the highest-ranked subnational government in West Africa for education financing.
The commendation was conveyed by Mr. Ian Attfield, Senior Education Adviser at the British High Commission to Nigeria, who described the achievement as a significant milestone in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
According to Attfield, the recognition reflects Kano State’s strong commitment to prioritising education as a key driver of sustainable development and human capital growth.
In a formal notification to Governor Yusuf, the organisers of the award announced that Kano State ranked first among all subnational governments in West Africa, earning the prestigious title of “Grand Laureate of Education Financing” as the 2026 Best Performing Subnational Government in West Africa.
The organisers stated that the recognition was based on Kano State’s outstanding commitment to education financing, as well as its implementation of policies that promote equitable access to quality education. They noted that the award honours governments that demonstrate exceptional leadership in allocating resources to the education sector.
Since assuming office, the Yusuf administration has invested heavily in the education sector through the rehabilitation and construction of schools, recruitment of teachers, provision of learning materials, expansion of scholarship programmes, and increased budgetary allocations aimed at improving access to quality education across the state.
