The National Examinations Council has honoured the Kano State Government with an Award of Excellence for emerging as the second-best outstanding state in the sponsorship and registration of candidates for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for two consecutive academic sessions.
The award was presented during the grand finale of NECO’s 25th anniversary celebration held on Thursday at the International Conference Centre.

The event attracted education stakeholders, policymakers, and dignitaries from across the country to celebrate NECO’s contributions to credible examinations and educational development in Nigeria over the past 25 years.
Receiving the award on behalf of the Kano State Government, the Commissioner for Education, Ali Haryna Abubakar Makoda, described the recognition as a reflection of the state government’s commitment to improving access to quality education and ensuring that no qualified student is denied the opportunity to sit for examinations due to financial challenges.
Makoda dedicated the award to the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, as well as teachers, students, and education officials whose collective efforts contributed to the achievement.
According to him, the state government has consistently invested resources in sponsoring and registering thousands of students for NECO examinations over the last two academic years.
“This award reflects the hard work, perseverance, and commitment of the Kano State Government in prioritizing education as the foundation for sustainable development. The government will continue to support students and expand access to education across the state,” the commissioner stated.
He added that the recognition aligns with the state’s ongoing education reform initiatives, including the education emergency recovery plan aimed at improving learning outcomes, infrastructure, and access to education, especially for adolescent girls and youths.
Makoda also expressed appreciation to NECO for the recognition and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining high standards in candidate sponsorship, registration, and adherence to examination ethics.
The statement was signed by Musbahu Aminu Yakasai, Director of Public Enlightenment, Kano State Ministry of Education.
