The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has stepped up efforts to consolidate the party’s influence in Northern Nigeria with a high-level visit to former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, at his Mundubawa residence in Kano.
Leading a delegation that included Hayatu Gwarzo, the APC chairman described the visit as both a gesture of respect and a strategic engagement aimed at strengthening alliances ahead of future elections.
Yilwatda praised Shekarau as “a sincere man and a decent politician,” emphasizing that his vast experience and political network remain critical to Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
While noting his personal attachment to Kano, which he called his “second home,” the APC chairman said the visit was driven by urgent political realities.
According to him,
Northern Nigeria stands at a crucial crossroads that demands unity among key stakeholders to ensure stability and sustained development. Reflecting on past political dynamics, Yilwatda recalled the North’s support for former President Muhammadu Buhari to complete his tenure, stressing that the same principle of fairness should now allow the South to complete its turn under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“I am a northerner, and I will not allow anything that will sabotage the North,” he stated.
The APC chairman also highlighted major federal infrastructure projects, including the Lagos–Kano–Maradi rail line and ongoing gas pipeline initiatives, as evidence of the administration’s commitment to regional development. He described Kano as a major commercial hub in sub-Saharan Africa, noting that these projects would significantly boost economic growth.
Making a direct appeal, Yilwatda urged Shekarau to join the APC, describing him as a key political figure whose leadership is vital for the party’s success.
Responding, Shekarau expressed appreciation for the visit, describing it as “brotherly.”
However, he acknowledged internal challenges within the Peoples Democratic Party, which he likened to a “serious cancer.”
He said consultations are ongoing with key stakeholders, including his Shura Council, and assured that he would soon announce his next political move.
