The Kano State Government, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has disbursed a total of N32 billion to clear part of the inherited backlog of unpaid retirees’ gratuities and death benefits, signaling a major step toward addressing long-standing obligations.
Governor Yusuf disclosed this on Wednesday during the flag-off of the sixth tranche of payments to pensioners in the state.
According to him, the administration inherited a liability of N48 billion as of May 2023 but has steadily reduced the burden through phased payments.
“As of May 2023, we inherited N48 billion retirees’ gratuities and death benefits as liabilities,” the governor said.
“Alhamdulillahi, today I am happy to say that N27 billion has been settled in five tranches.
Today we have N5 billion as the sixth tranche. So, with this, we have now paid N32 billion out of the N48 we inherited.”
He reaffirmed his administration’s determination to clear the remaining balance before the end of the year, stressing that the move is part of broader efforts to reposition Kano State as a model of responsible governance.
“The settlement of these outstanding gratuities and death benefits not only alleviates the hardship faced by affected families but also reaffirms the administration’s promise to restore trust in government and uphold social justice,” Yusuf added.
The governor also commended the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners for their patience and cooperation throughout the repayment process.
In response, a cross-section of pensioners expressed gratitude to the state government for the continued payments, describing the gesture as timely and impactful.
Some of them also called on fellow retirees to support the administration’s efforts, noting that sustained backing would ensure the completion of the payment process and consolidation of ongoing reforms.
