A member of the House of Representatives, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, has secured federal approval for a N90 billion project aimed at constructing and rehabilitating the major Tiga Bridge and developing 2,500 hectares of irrigable farmland in southern Kano State.
Rurum represents the Rano, Kibiya and Bunkure Federal Constituency in the National Assembly.
The Managing Director of the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, disclosed this during an inspection visit to the project site on Tuesday.
According to Bichi, contractors have already been mobilised, signalling the commencement of work on the massive infrastructure and agricultural development initiative.
He explained that the project, which is under the supervision of the River Basin Authority, would be executed according to approved engineering standards to ensure durability and long-term benefits for the communities.
Bichi said the initiative is designed to boost agricultural production, improve water management, and strengthen food security in the region.
He revealed that the dam component of the project would provide approximately two billion cubic metres of water to support irrigation across the newly developed farmlands.
“The project will significantly improve farming activities by enabling year-round cultivation and enhancing economic development in the area,” he said.
The project also includes the construction of a permanent bridge and other supporting infrastructure to improve transportation and connectivity among communities in southern Kano.
Bichi stated that preliminary structural works and land filling would commence immediately ahead of the rainy season, while the Authority would ensure strict monitoring and supervision to guarantee quality delivery.
He commended the Federal Government for funding the intervention, describing it as a major step toward closing infrastructure gaps and expanding agricultural capacity in Kano State.
The project is expected to create vast opportunities for farmers and improve socio-economic activities across the benefiting communities.
