The Kano State Government has intensified efforts to diversify its energy sources, with a renewed focus on run-of-river power generation as a sustainable solution to electricity challenges.

The Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Engr. Dr. Gaddafi Sani Shehu, disclosed this during a stakeholder engagement workshop organised by the UK PACT at Comfort Hub Hotel. He said the state’s abundant rivers and water bodies present significant opportunities for clean and reliable energy generation.

According to him, adopting run-of-river hydropower systems would not only improve electricity supply but also stimulate economic growth across the state. He explained that the approach offers multiple advantages, including minimal environmental disruption, reduced operational costs, and improved access to electricity, particularly in rural communities.

Engr. Shehu stressed the importance of strategic partnerships, calling on investors, development partners, and relevant stakeholders to collaborate with the state government in harnessing these opportunities. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing an enabling environment that supports investment and innovation in the energy sector.

Also speaking, the Director General of the Kano State Investment Promotion Agency (KanInvest), Dr. Muhammad Nazir Halliru, highlighted the broader economic impact of such initiatives. He noted that run-of-river projects have the potential to create jobs, boost local economies, and enhance the livelihoods of residents.

The workshop also examined key opportunities and challenges in the sector, including the development of small-scale hydroelectric projects, irrigation systems, and sustainable water supply solutions.

The engagement underscores Kano’s drive toward clean energy and sustainable development.
