The Kano State Government has approved the merger of the Ministry of Higher Education with the Ministry of Education as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen coordination and accelerate reforms in the state’s education sector.

The decision was announced in a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson to the governor, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

According to the statement, the restructuring approved by Abba Kabir Yusuf will create a unified Ministry of Education responsible for overseeing all levels of education in the state.

Under the new arrangement, a specialized Directorate of Higher Education will be established within the ministry to manage tertiary education matters. The directorate will be led by a Permanent Secretary and supported by relevant personnel to ensure effective supervision and administration of higher education institutions.

The statement further explained that all agencies previously under the defunct Ministry of Higher Education, including the Scholarship Board, will now operate under the Ministry of Education. In addition, state-owned universities and other higher institutions will be supervised by the newly created directorate.

The restructuring forms part of the state government’s broader education sector reform agenda aimed at repositioning the system, eliminating duplication of responsibilities and improving policy coordination across different levels of education.

Governor Yusuf said the reform is also designed to reduce the cost of governance while promoting efficiency, accountability and improved service delivery in the education sector.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to implementing comprehensive reforms that will revive education in the state and secure a brighter future for young people.

The Offices of the Secretary to the State Government and the Head of Service have been directed to ensure immediate implementation of the new structure.
