Former Military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), has called on Nigerians to close ranks and defend the nation’s sovereignty through unity and collective resolve.

Speaking in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) from London on Tuesday, Gen. Abubakar expressed concern over reported comments attributed to former U.S. President Donald Trump, describing them as a “serious threat to Nigeria’s hard-won peace and unity.”

The elder statesman warned that such remarks could endanger the country’s stability if not addressed with maturity and wisdom. He urged Nigerians to resist any attempt to sow division, saying this is a time to rally around the nation rather than allow pride or internal conflict to take precedence.

“At this critical moment, unity, wisdom, and diplomacy must take precedence over division and pride,” he said.

Abubakar also appealed to the United States to stand with Nigeria in addressing its security challenges rather than issuing threats. He advocated for a strategic diplomatic engagement with Washington and Trump to de-escalate tensions and find common ground through “quiet diplomacy.”

He reiterated that dialogue and cooperation, not confrontation, were key to preserving peace and advancing mutual interests between both nations.
