Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Customs, Hon. Leke Joseph Abejide, have engaged Yoruba and other non-indigenous communities in Kano State in a political mobilisation effort ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The initiative seeks to rally support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election and Governor Yusuf’s second-term ambition.
The mobilisation took place during an empowerment programme organised by Abejide, who represents Yagba West, Yagba East and Mopa-Muro Federal Constituency of Kogi State. At the event, the lawmaker announced a N500 million business empowerment grant targeted at Yoruba women residing in Kano.
According to the Director-General of Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the programme was part of Abejide’s efforts to empower non-indigenous residents and strengthen relationships among different ethnic communities in the state.
Speaking at the gathering, Abejide disclosed that he had lived in Kano for more than 30 years, describing the state as his second home. He explained that a significant portion of his wealth was established and secured in Kano before he ventured into politics.
Beyond the financial empowerment initiative, the lawmaker distributed food items, clothing and other household materials to members of other non-indigenous communities, including the Igala, Ebira and Bassa.
Abejide also declared his support for President Tinubu, Governor Yusuf and other APC candidates ahead of the 2027 elections, urging beneficiaries to reciprocate his gestures through their votes.
He further promised to introduce additional empowerment programmes if the communities continued to support his political interests, disclosing that his next intervention would target Hausa and Fulani residents in Nasarawa Local Government Area.
In his remarks, Governor Yusuf called on other members of the National Assembly to emulate Abejide by extending economic support to their constituents and Nigerians from different ethnic and religious backgrounds.
He said such interventions would promote national unity, peaceful coexistence and stronger relationships among Nigeria’s diverse communities.
Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, who attended the event, also expressed support for the re-election bids of President Tinubu and Governor Yusuf.
Bello argued that non-indigenous residents of Kano had a stake in the continued development of the state, citing federal government projects attracted to Kano and ongoing infrastructural development under the state government.
N3bn Yoruba Palace Project Unveiled
A major highlight of the gathering was the unveiling of a N3 billion fundraising initiative for the construction of an ultra-modern palace for the Oba of Yoruba in Kano.
Abejide made an initial donation of N220 million towards the project, while two of his associates contributed N200 million and N500 million, respectively.
The Kano State Government also pledged N100 million in support of the proposed palace project.
The event attracted political leaders, traditional representatives and members of Yoruba and other non-indigenous communities, highlighting ongoing engagements between political stakeholders and ethnic groups in Kano ahead of the 2027 general elections.
