The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has commended the Federal University of Science and Technology (FUST), Kabo, Kano State, for securing accreditation for 20 academic programmes, including medical courses, ahead of the institution’s maiden academic session.

Barau congratulated the university’s Governing Council, management and staff on the achievement, describing the development as a significant milestone in the institution’s growth. He urged them to sustain the progress and maintain the highest standards of academic excellence.

The Deputy Senate President made the remarks on Thursday at the National Assembly, Abuja, when the Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson of the university’s Governing Council, Chief (Mrs) Grace Titilayo Laoye-Tomori, led members of the council on a courtesy visit.

During the meeting, Laoye-Tomori disclosed that the university had secured accreditation for 20 programmes, including medical programmes, ahead of the commencement of its academic activities.

She described the achievement as a major breakthrough that had positioned the institution for a successful take-off, while expressing appreciation to Senator Barau for his contributions to its establishment and transformation from a polytechnic into a university.

According to her, Senator Barau initiated the process in 2016 by sponsoring the bill for the establishment of the Federal Polytechnic, Kabo, before facilitating its conversion into a full-fledged university in 2025.

She said the accreditation of the 20 programmes was a testament to the progress recorded by the institution and acknowledged the senator’s commitment to expanding access to quality higher education, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

Responding, Senator Barau expressed delight over the rapid progress made by the university and reiterated his commitment to supporting its development.

He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the bill that facilitated the conversion of the institution into a university.

“I am delighted with the remarkable progress recorded by the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo, within such a short period. I commend the Governing Council, management and staff for this achievement and urge them to sustain the momentum by maintaining the highest standards of academic excellence,” he said.

The Deputy Senate President further stressed the importance of investing in education and human capital development, describing young people as the nation’s greatest asset.

“I remain committed to supporting the institution in every way possible because our greatest asset as a nation is our human resources, particularly the youth. We must ensure they have access to quality education and the necessary skills to drive national development,” he added.

Commenting on the development, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy President of the Senate, Ismail Mudashir, said the accreditation represented an important step towards fulfilling the vision behind the establishment of FUST Kabo.

He noted that the development reflected the progress made in transforming the institution into a centre for science, technology and innovation, with the inclusion of medical programmes further expanding opportunities for students seeking quality higher education.

Mudashir added that Senator Barau remained committed to supporting initiatives that would strengthen educational institutions, expand access to learning and equip Nigerian youths with the knowledge and skills required to contribute meaningfully to national development.
