With the 2027 presidential election approaching, the AA Envoys, a youth- and women-led political advocacy group, has urged Nigerians and political stakeholders to pay attention to the economic proposals of African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.

The group made the call in a statement issued as part of its 100-day countdown programme to the 2027 presidential election, saying its campaign would focus on examining policy proposals presented by presidential candidates on issues affecting the economy and the welfare of Nigerians.

The National Coordinator of the group, Engr. Sirajo Abdullahi, said the AA Envoys would continue to draw public attention to policy proposals relating to the cost of living, domestic production, employment and economic opportunities.

A key proposal highlighted by the group is Atiku’s plan for a targeted production subsidy for petroleum products refined in Nigeria.

Atiku has said that, if elected, his administration would introduce a capped and transparent production subsidy for petroleum products refined domestically and sold to Nigerians. According to his proposal, imported petroleum products would not qualify for the subsidy, while the programme would be subject to a spending limit, National Assembly approval and independent audits.

The former vice president has presented the proposal as an alternative to the previous fuel subsidy arrangement, arguing that government intervention should support domestic refining while helping to reduce the cost burden on consumers.

His position has also attracted scrutiny from political opponents. In September, the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council called on Atiku to provide further details on the legal, fiscal and operational framework for the proposed subsidy, including how it would operate under Nigeria’s petroleum-sector laws.

The AA Envoys said its countdown programme would not be limited to fuel policy, but would also examine proposals concerning employment, education, skills development, domestic production, purchasing power and broader economic opportunities for young Nigerians.

The organisation said it plans to publish a document outlining what it described as “100 policy reasons” for Nigerians to give Atiku’s programme public consideration. It added, however, that voters should examine the programmes of all candidates before making their choices.

“As the 2027 election approaches, the AA Envoys said it would continue its public engagement on economic policy and governance issues, with particular attention to measures that could affect the welfare and economic opportunities of Nigerian families,” the statement said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) currently lists January 16, 2027 as the date for the presidential and National Assembly elections, following a revised timetable issued in February 2026.
