Former Senate President and National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Sen. David Mark, has congratulated Nigerians on the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, calling for renewed commitment to national unity, peace, justice and development.

In a goodwill message issued in Abuja on Tuesday, Mark described Nigeria’s independence from British colonial rule as a defining milestone and a reflection of the resilience, courage and aspirations of the Nigerian people.

He said the 66th anniversary should go beyond celebrating the country’s past, urging Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the nation’s journey and renew their determination to build a country where justice, equity, security and prosperity are accessible to all.

Mark noted that Nigeria possesses vast human and material resources capable of transforming the country into a prosperous and globally respected nation, stressing that the challenge lies in harnessing those resources responsibly for the common good.

“At 66, our nation has every reason to celebrate, but we must also reflect deeply on our journey as a people. Independence was not simply the termination of colonial rule; it was the beginning of our collective responsibility to build a nation founded on justice, unity, peace and shared prosperity.”

He urged Nigerians to see the country’s diversity as a strength rather than a source of division, while calling for greater national unity, mutual respect and inclusion.

According to him, every Nigerian, regardless of ethnic, religious, political or geographical background, should have a strong sense of belonging.

Mark further stressed the need to place national interest above personal and sectional considerations, saying stronger democratic institutions, respect for the rule of law and greater opportunities for young Nigerians were essential to building the country they desire.

He also acknowledged the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers, past leaders, members of the armed forces and security agencies, as well as millions of ordinary citizens who have contributed to the survival and development of the nation.

The ADC national chairman called on political leaders to regard public office as a solemn trust and an opportunity to serve, rather than a platform for personal enrichment. He also urged citizens to remain committed to democratic values and peaceful coexistence.

Mark appealed to Nigerians not to lose faith in the country despite its challenges, saying the nation’s greatest strength remains the resilience and determination of its people.

He expressed optimism that Nigeria could overcome its present difficulties through visionary leadership, responsible citizenship, institutional reforms and renewed patriotism.

He congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary and prayed for peace, stability, prosperity and greater national unity.

“As we celebrate Nigeria at 66, let us renew our faith in our country and recommit ourselves to the task of building the Nigeria we desire and deserve. The journey may be challenging, but together, with courage, sacrifice and sincerity of purpose, we can build a nation that future generations will be proud to inherit.”
