Gov Yusuf Employs 8,588 Teachers, Commends FG for Suspending NECO Fee Hike

Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Tuesday presented appointment letters to 8,588 teachers as part of his administration’s drive to strengthen basic and secondary education across the state.

The beneficiaries include 4,900 newly recruited and trained teachers as well as 3,688 ABBA Gida-Gida Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) teachers. The appointment letters were presented during a ceremony held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

Speaking at the event, Governor Yusuf described the recruitment exercise as another major milestone in his administration’s commitment to rebuilding the education sector through strategic investment in human capital.

He reiterated that education remains the foundation of sustainable development, stressing that no society can achieve lasting progress without prioritising learning.

The governor disclosed that his administration allocated 31 per cent of the 2026 state budget to education—one of the highest allocations in the country—adding that the investment is already yielding results, with Kano emerging as the best-performing state in this year’s National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations.

Yusuf also applauded the Federal Government for suspending the proposed increase in NECO registration fees, describing the decision as a timely intervention that would ease the financial burden on parents and improve access to education for students nationwide.

According to him, his administration is implementing comprehensive reforms aimed at improving school infrastructure, enhancing teaching quality and creating a more conducive learning environment across the state.

He maintained that education must go beyond academic excellence, saying, “Education without moral values is a body without a soul.” He added that his administration is committed to producing disciplined, responsible and patriotic citizens.

The governor urged the newly employed teachers to serve with professionalism, integrity and dedication, reminding them that they have been entrusted with the responsibility of shaping the future of thousands of young learners.

He also commended teachers, education stakeholders and development partners for their continued support in advancing education in Kano State.

In his remarks, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, described teachers as the bedrock of every prosperous nation, noting that quality education begins with committed and competent educators.

He praised Governor Yusuf for prioritising education through massive investments in school infrastructure, teacher recruitment and other developmental initiatives, describing Kano’s efforts as deserving of national recognition.

The minister urged the newly recruited teachers to justify the confidence reposed in them by serving with dedication, discipline and excellence, stressing that their commitment would help produce future leaders capable of driving Nigeria’s economic and social transformation.

Also speaking, the Kano State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, said the success of any education system depends largely on competent teachers, adequate teaching and learning materials, and conducive infrastructure.

He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to sustaining reforms aimed at improving learning outcomes across the state.

The Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Malam Yusuf Kabir, described education as a collective responsibility and appealed to wealthy individuals, development partners and community leaders to complement the government’s efforts in strengthening the sector.

He also advised the newly employed teachers to remain patient, disciplined and punctual in the discharge of their duties.

The ceremony featured the formal presentation of appointment letters to the 8,588 teachers and was enlivened by cultural performances by school pupils and entertainment by political musicians.
