KANO, July 9, 2026 — Stakeholders in the Kannywood film industry have declared their support for the re-election of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, ahead of the 2027 general elections, while the Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the entertainment industry to promote public awareness and government programmes.

The endorsement was made on Thursday during a courtesy visit by members of the Kannywood Political Coalition to the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, at his office.

Speaking during the meeting, Waiya described Kannywood as one of the largest entertainment industries in Northern Nigeria, noting that it plays a significant role in shaping public opinion and mobilising citizens. He said the state government would strengthen collaboration with industry stakeholders by using film, music and drama to educate the public on health, education, security and other developmental issues.

The commissioner also encouraged members of the industry to explore opportunities for expanding the profession, assuring them of the government’s support to improve their operations and enhance their competitiveness on the global stage.

Waiya commended the coalition for what he described as its political maturity and clear vision, saying its decision to support Governor Yusuf’s second-term bid reflected confidence in the administration’s leadership and commitment to Kano’s development.

He highlighted key achievements of the Yusuf administration in the areas of education, healthcare, infrastructure, security, potable water supply, as well as youth and women empowerment programmes across the state’s 44 local government areas.

According to the commissioner, the administration is currently executing more than 1,550 projects across Kano State, with over 700 already completed, while the remaining projects are at various stages of completion.

He further assured the coalition that the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs would work closely with Kannywood practitioners to communicate government policies and development initiatives effectively in local languages and through formats that resonate with the people.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Alhaji Hamisu Lamido Iyan Tama, said the visit was to formally declare the coalition’s total support for Governor Yusuf ahead of the 2027 elections.

He explained that the Kannywood Political Coalition was established to mobilise stakeholders within the entertainment industry in support of the governor’s administration and his re-election campaign.

According to Iyan Tama, members of the coalition come from different political parties and backgrounds but have chosen to unite in support of Governor Yusuf because of what they described as his administration’s developmental achievements.

“We believe Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf deserves the opportunity to continue the remarkable progress being recorded across Kano State. These achievements have inspired us to publicly declare our total support for his re-election,” he said.

The coalition also pledged to use its platforms and influence within the entertainment industry to promote government policies and mobilise public support for the administration ahead of future political activities.

The statement was signed by Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru, Director of Public Enlightenment, Kano State Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs.
