The Kano State Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change has announced the commencement of applications for communities seeking access to boreholes across the Greater Kano area as the state government intensifies efforts to address water shortages.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, noting that the initiative is aimed at providing immediate relief to residents while major water infrastructure rehabilitation projects are underway.
According to him, the intervention is part of the 166 solar-powered boreholes approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to boost water supply and provide an estimated 4.14 million litres of water daily across affected communities.
Hashim said the project reflects the administration’s commitment to improving access to clean and safe drinking water for residents of Kano State.
He explained that although the government is implementing long-term solutions through the rehabilitation of key facilities, including the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, Challawa Water Treatment Plant and the Goron Dutse Water Reservoir Complex, urgent measures are needed to support communities currently facing acute water scarcity.
“The rehabilitation works on these critical water infrastructure projects are progressing steadily and are expected to be completed within eight months of commencement. Upon completion, they will significantly improve water supply across Kano metropolis and neighbouring communities,” he said.
The commissioner urged community members, traditional leaders and other stakeholders to submit applications through the Ministry’s official borehole application platform to enable authorities identify and prioritise areas with the greatest need.
He stated that applicants would be required to provide basic information, including their names, contact details, local government areas, wards, community names, availability of existing functional boreholes and the estimated number of beneficiaries.
Applications can be submitted through the Ministry’s official portal at https://kanowaterproject.com.
Hashim reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to water resources and implementing sustainable solutions that enhance the welfare and quality of life of residents.
He encouraged eligible communities to apply promptly to benefit from the intervention programme.
