The Kano State Police Command has announced the establishment of a specialised tactical unit aimed at combating violent crimes across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, on April 24, 2026, officially inaugurated the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in line with directives from the Inspector General of Police and provisions of the Nigeria Police Act 2020.

The VCRU is an intelligence-driven unit tasked with addressing armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent offences. The initiative signals a renewed effort by the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen security operations while promoting professionalism, accountability, and public trust.

According to the Command, the unit’s mandate includes responding swiftly to incidents, conducting thorough investigations, and ensuring prosecution of offenders. Its operations will strictly adhere to constitutional provisions and international human rights standards, while prioritising the protection of lives and property.

The Police also emphasised that officers assigned to the VCRU have undergone rigorous screening and specialised training in human rights and professional conduct, aligning with global best practices.

To enhance transparency and public confidence, the Command disclosed plans to collaborate with a State Civilian Oversight Board made up of representatives from civil society, traditional institutions, and the legal community. In addition, a dedicated media liaison officer, public complaints hotline, and a physical complaints desk will be introduced to ensure accountability, with all complaints to be addressed within 24 hours.

Speaking on the initiative, Bakori described the unit as a major step forward in crime prevention in Kano State.

“The security of lives and property in Kano State is non-negotiable.

The VCRU represents our renewed commitment to intelligence-led, professional policing that respects the rights of all citizens. I take personal responsibility for its conduct, performance, and public image,” he said.

The Police Command called on residents to support the new unit by providing timely and credible information, assuring the public of regular updates on its activities and achievements.
