The Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE), Dutse Chapter, has organised a public awareness walk to sensitise residents of Jigawa State on the growing dangers of building and infrastructure collapse in Nigeria.
Building collapse continues to pose a serious threat to lives and property across the country, often resulting in fatalities, economic losses, and environmental damage.
During the awareness walk along major streets of Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, members of the institute engaged residents on the common causes of structural failure. These include the use of substandard construction materials, poor engineering designs, and non-compliance with approved building regulations.
The institute also called on members of the public to always engage qualified civil engineers and other building professionals when undertaking construction projects.
According to NICE, strict adherence to professional standards and regulatory guidelines remains crucial to preventing avoidable structural failures and safeguarding lives and property.
Recent statistics indicate that between 2023 and 2025, Nigeria recorded 37 cases of building collapse, leading to 83 deaths, with Lagos State accounting for the highest number of incidents nationwide.
