The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADC-PCC) has described Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s response to its earlier statement as diversionary, questioning his political priorities and alleged closeness to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu.

The Council’s reaction followed Kwankwaso’s response to its earlier appeal urging him to stop attacking the ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and instead focus on holding the Tinubu-led administration accountable for the country’s economic and security challenges.

Kwankwaso is the vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), whose presidential candidate is Peter Obi.

In a statement issued on Sunday, ADC-PCC Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, said Kwankwaso’s response failed to address the substance of the Council’s concerns, arguing that he devoted more attention to criticising the ADC than challenging the ruling party.

The Council questioned why Kwankwaso appeared more focused on attacking Atiku and the ADC than confronting the APC over the difficulties facing Nigerians.

“Why is Senator Kwankwaso making our candidate the issue instead of confronting the ruling APC, whose policies have made life increasingly difficult for millions of Nigerians?” the Council asked.

The ADC-PCC argued that the country’s pressing challenges, including hunger, insecurity, rising fuel prices, the depreciation of the naira and worsening economic hardship, should be the primary concerns of opposition politicians.

According to the Council, politicians seeking to provide an alternative to the Tinubu administration should direct their criticism towards the government’s policies and their impact on citizens rather than engage in repeated exchanges with fellow opposition figures.

It also challenged Kwankwaso to explain why his criticisms appeared more frequently directed at Atiku and the ADC than at the APC-led government.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the ADC cannot and will not be distracted by Senator Kwankwaso,” the statement declared.

The Council described the ADC as a growing political platform committed to mobilising Nigerians around an alternative to the current administration, insisting that its focus remained on addressing the country’s challenges ahead of the 2027 general election.

It further urged Kwankwaso to clarify his political position, alleging that his attacks on the ADC could be an attempt to gain favour with the ruling party. The Council challenged him to openly align himself with the APC if he shared its political agenda.

The ADC-PCC reaffirmed its commitment to party unity, political mobilisation and its stated objective of presenting Nigerians with an alternative in the 2027 general election.
