Kano Conducts Mass Wedding for 1,500 Widows as Gov Yusuf Stands as Guardian for Terror Attack Survivor

The Kano State Government has conducted a mass wedding for 1,500 widows across the state’s 44 Local Government Areas, with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf serving as the guardian (Waliyyi) for a groom who lost his entire family in a terrorist attack.

Haruna Bashir, whose wife and children were reportedly killed by suspected terrorists in the Chiranci area of Kano State, was married to Rahinatu Kamilu Yunusa during the ceremony held at the Juma’at Mosque of the Emir’s Palace in Kano.

The Emir of Kano, His Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II, represented the bride’s family, while Governor Yusuf stood in as Bashir’s guardian. A dowry of N200,000 was paid for the marriage.

The mass wedding programme was simultaneously conducted across the state’s 44 local government areas as part of the government’s social welfare initiative for widows and other eligible beneficiaries.

Under the programme, each bride received a N200,000 dowry from the state government alongside additional financial support to enable them establish small-scale businesses.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, said the government had gone beyond the wedding to help Haruna Bashir rebuild his life after the tragic loss of his family.

“The Kano State Government provided additional support to Haruna Bashir to enable him recover from the devastating tragedy that claimed the lives of his wife and children,” Daurawa said.

According to him, the government sponsored Bashir to perform the Umrah pilgrimage, facilitated his participation in the Hajj pilgrimage and allocated him a house at Amana City in Kano.

“These interventions are aimed at easing his emotional and psychological burden and helping him begin a new chapter in life,” he added.

Daurawa also urged the newly married couples to uphold the sanctity of marriage by living in peace and mutual understanding.

“I advise all the couples to fear Allah, respect one another and build stable families that will contribute positively to the development of society,” he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Musbahu Abdullahi, expressed appreciation to the Kano State Government for the initiative.

“We are grateful to the Kano State Government for giving us this opportunity. I promise to treat my wife with love, care and responsibility,” Abdullahi said.

Special prayers were offered at the end of the ceremony for lasting peace, stability and unity in Kano State and Nigeria.

The Kano State Government allocated about N300 million for the latest phase of the mass wedding programme, which is designed to support widows and other qualified beneficiaries across the state.
