Gov Yusuf Launches Anti-Drug Task Force, Signs Executive Order to Tackle Thuggery in Kano

Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has inaugurated a Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and signed an Executive Order aimed at tackling thuggery and other related criminal activities across the state.

The move is part of the state government’s renewed efforts to address the growing challenge of drug abuse and improve public safety.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

Speaking during the inauguration, Governor Yusuf described drug abuse as one of the greatest threats facing Kano’s youth, warning that the menace contributes to violent crimes, destroys families, weakens economic productivity, and undermines social stability.

He said the newly inaugurated Task Force would coordinate the state’s response through intelligence gathering, law enforcement, public awareness campaigns, rehabilitation programmes, and collaboration with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders.

The governor pledged full government support for the committee, including adequate funding, operational vehicles, office accommodation, logistics, and security backing, while assuring members of operational independence to enable them to effectively carry out their responsibilities.

Yusuf also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding rehabilitation services for victims of drug abuse. According to him, the state has already established separate rehabilitation centres for male and female patients and will continue to strengthen programmes that support their recovery and reintegration into society.

He explained that the Executive Order against thuggery would provide a stronger legal framework to dismantle criminal gangs, curb political violence, and complement the efforts of security agencies in maintaining law and order across Kano State.

In his acceptance speech, Chairman of the Task Force, Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, thanked Governor Yusuf for the confidence reposed in him and other members of the committee.

He assured the governor and the people of Kano that the Task Force would discharge its responsibilities with integrity, professionalism, and impartiality.

Rimin Gado said the committee would work closely with security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, educational institutions, and community leaders to combat drug abuse and promote lasting peace across the state.

He described the establishment of the Task Force as a clear demonstration of the governor’s determination to protect the future of Kano’s youth and strengthen public safety.

Governor Yusuf called on residents to support the initiative by providing credible information and cooperating with security agencies, stressing that the fight against drug abuse and thuggery requires collective action from both government and the public.

He expressed confidence that the combined implementation of the Executive Order and the activities of the Multi-Agency Task Force would significantly reduce drug-related crimes and contribute to a safer, more peaceful, and more prosperous Kano State.
