Distinguished Senator Aminu Iya Abbas, representing Adamawa Central Senatorial District, has been conferred with the prestigious Fellow of the Institute of Capital Market Academics of Nigeria (FCMAN), in recognition of his outstanding contributions to accounting, public finance, legislative governance and national development.
The honour acknowledges Senator Abbas’ decades-long career marked by professionalism, integrity and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s financial and governance institutions.
A seasoned accountant and financial expert, Senator Abbas holds a National Diploma in Accounting from the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, and a Master’s Degree in Treasury Management from Bayero University, Kano. His academic and professional background has positioned him among Nigeria’s leading experts in accounting, forensic investigation, taxation and public finance.
Over the years, he has built an impressive career across both the private and public sectors, working with organisations including Sigma Securities, Africa Petroleum, KPMG Professional Services and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he was a pioneer member of the Commission’s foundation team. In 2008, he established KPMG’s Forensic Unit, further reinforcing transparency, accountability and financial integrity in Nigeria’s corporate and public sectors.
A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Certified Fraud Examiner and member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, Senator Abbas has consistently demonstrated professional excellence and ethical leadership throughout his career.
Beyond his professional achievements, Senator Abbas has earned recognition for his impactful public service. He served two terms in the Adamawa State House of Assembly and was Speaker of the Seventh Assembly, where he championed prudent financial management, institutional reforms and transparent governance. His leadership was widely credited with improving the efficiency and stability of the Assembly.
Since his election to the 10th Senate, Senator Abbas has continued to distinguish himself through active legislative engagement and policy advocacy. He currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology, where he promotes policies that support scientific research, technological innovation, digital transformation and sustainable economic development.
His legislative priorities align with the objectives of the 2nd Biennial Conference of the Institute of Capital Market Academics of Nigeria, themed “The Nigerian Capital Market as a Catalyst for Equitable and Inclusive Growth.” Throughout his public service, Senator Abbas has consistently advocated policies that encourage financial inclusion, economic diversification, institutional accountability and long-term national development.
The Institute noted that the conferment of the FCMAN Fellowship reflects Senator Abbas’ enduring contributions to strengthening Nigeria’s financial architecture, advancing good governance and supporting reforms that enhance the country’s capital market ecosystem.
The award also recognises his commitment to building strong institutions, promoting transparency and fostering policies that contribute to a resilient and globally competitive Nigerian economy.
