Senator Kawu Sumaila and Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum have facilitated the approval of a N90 billion project for the construction and rehabilitation of the Tiga Bridge and irrigation infrastructure in southern Kano State.

The project also includes the development of 2,500 hectares of irrigable farmland aimed at enhancing agricultural production and improving livelihoods across the benefiting communities.

Sen. Sumaila represents Kano South Senatorial District, while Rurum represents the Rano, Kibiya and Bunkure Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Managing Director of the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, disclosed this during an inspection visit to the project site on Tuesday.

According to Bichi, the visit marked the official commencement of the project, adding that contractors had already been mobilised to the site ahead of full construction activities.

He stated that the project would be executed under the supervision of the authority in line with approved engineering standards to ensure quality, durability and long-term impact.

Bichi explained that the initiative was designed to improve water management and significantly boost agricultural productivity in the area.

He further revealed that the dam component of the project would provide about two billion cubic metres of water to support irrigation activities on the newly developed farmlands.

“The project will enhance farming activities, enable all-season cultivation and contribute greatly to food security and economic growth in the region,” he said.

The project also includes the construction of a permanent bridge and other supporting infrastructure.

Preliminary structural works and land-filling activities are expected to begin immediately before the peak of the rainy season.

Bichi assured residents that the authority would maintain strict supervision and continuous monitoring to ensure timely completion and compliance with quality standards.

He commended the Federal Government for providing the funding, describing the intervention as a major step toward addressing infrastructural deficits and strengthening agricultural capacity in Kano State.

When completed, the project is expected to improve transportation, expand irrigation farming and create wider economic opportunities for communities across southern Kano State.
