Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has revealed that his administration is putting finishing touches to what will become the state’s first-ever N1 trillion budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year.

The governor made the disclosure on Friday while declaring open the Second Special Executive Council Meeting in Kano. The meeting was convened to review and fine-tune the draft budget ahead of its presentation to the Kano State House of Assembly next week. The announcement was contained in a statement released by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa.

Governor Yusuf described the proposed budget as a landmark development that underscores his administration’s commitment to accelerating infrastructure upgrades, urban renewal and broad-based socio-economic growth across the state.

He attributed the unprecedented budget size to a significant boost in internally generated revenue (IGR) and improved efficiency in the state’s revenue collection processes.

“We have strengthened internal revenue mechanisms and sealed leakages, enabling us to plan boldly for transformative projects in 2026,” the governor said.

According to him, the 2026 budget will prioritise housing, agriculture, education, healthcare and support for small and medium enterprises — all aimed at driving economic expansion and improving livelihoods for residents.

Yusuf added that once the document is finalised, it will be forwarded to the State House of Assembly for legislative scrutiny and approval.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency, fiscal discipline and ensuring equitable resource allocation across all sectors.

If approved, the N1 trillion proposal will be the largest state budget ever recorded in northern Nigeria.
