The Kano State Government has directed the State Hisba Board to commence preparations for the wedding of no fewer than 2,000 couples under its mass wedding programme.
The board’s Deputy Commander-General, Sheikh Mujahid Aminudeen, on Thursday, said the board would soon begin preparation to ensure the success of the event.
“We are planning to conduct a mass wedding of another batch of 2,000 couples as directed by the state government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf,” he said.
Even though the Commander General did not state the actual date for the grand event, he noted that there are procedures for the conduct of the marriage.
According to him, all prospective couples who registered must go for medical screening to ascertain their health status as they would have to undergo HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, genotype and drug test screening, among others.
“All prospective couples interested in the wedding must register before participating in the state-planned mass wedding.
The medical screening is also part of the prerequisite arrangement of the mass wedding proceedings, and it’s compulsory because anybody who fails to present himself or herself for the screening will be automatically disqualified,” he said.
the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reintroduced the mass wedding scheme as part of efforts to support girls and women, including widows and divorcees, as well as spinsters whose parents want to marry them off but lack the wherewithal to shoulder the responsibility or cost of preparing the process.
The reintroduction of mass weddings in Kano State aims to check prostitution and other social vices, especially among divorcees, widows and spinsters in the state.
