Kano to Establish More Military Bases as Bandit Infiltration Raises Security Concerns

The Kano State Government says it has secured the Federal Government’s approval to establish additional military bases in security-prone areas of the state following growing concerns over the infiltration of armed bandits.

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has disclosed that the Federal Government has agreed to establish additional military bases in some local government areas of the state affected by rising security challenges.

The planned military bases are expected to strengthen security operations and improve the capacity of security agencies to respond rapidly to attacks and other threats in vulnerable communities.

Several local government areas, particularly those located close to neighbouring states, have recently recorded incidents of armed banditry, resulting in the deaths of residents and injuries to others.

Areas being considered for the establishment of the new military bases include Shanono, Bichi, Gwarzo, Doguwa and Tudun Wada, among other communities identified as vulnerable to attacks.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Taju Usman, disclosed the development following a meeting held on September 5, 2026, between Governor Yusuf and the chairmen of the 44 local government councils, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, the commissioner and the state Accountant-General.

According to Usman, the meeting focused extensively on security, infrastructure and human capital development, with participants agreeing on measures to strengthen the state’s security architecture.

He said Governor Yusuf had already met with the Minister of Defence, during which both parties agreed on the need to establish additional military bases in local government areas considered vulnerable to security threats.

The commissioner explained that the new bases would complement existing security structures, including the Nigeria Police Force, Neighbourhood Watch and Forest Guards.

He said the initiative would help improve security, facilitate rapid response to threats, protect vulnerable communities and safeguard lives and property.

N27.8bn CBT, ICT Centres

On education and infrastructure, Usman disclosed that contracts had been awarded for the establishment and provision of Computer-Based Test (CBT) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centres in each of the 44 local government areas.

He said work on the project, valued at N27.8 billion, would commence immediately.

According to him, the centres would provide students with better access to internet facilities for Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations and other computer-based tests.

One Ambulance for Each Ward

The commissioner also announced plans to provide one rural ambulance to every ward across Kano State as part of efforts to improve access to emergency and basic healthcare services.

He said two drivers would be employed for each ambulance, with preference given to qualified residents of the respective wards.

EV Charging Points, Solar Streetlights
Usman further disclosed that the state government plans to establish electric vehicle charging points at strategic locations within Kano metropolis as a pilot project.

He said the initiative would be expanded depending on the outcome of the pilot programme.

He also announced that the installation of solar-powered streetlights across the 44 local government areas would commence immediately.

According to him, the project was facilitated by Honourable Abba Bichi and is aimed at improving public lighting, strengthening security and promoting sustainable development across the state.

More Local Government Appointments

The commissioner said the government had also resolved to appoint 50 special reporters for each local government area, alongside 35 advisers for each local government chairman.

He added that 15 of the adviser positions would be allocated to members of the former APC structure.

Usman said the appointments were designed to strengthen grassroots engagement, improve communication and enhance effective administration at the local government level.

Women Empowerment Programme to Continue

On women empowerment, the commissioner said the new and improved monthly women empowerment programme would continue immediately.

He said the initiative was aimed at promoting economic empowerment, self-reliance and improved livelihoods among women across Kano State.

Usman said the resolutions reached at the meeting reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Government and the 44 local government councils to improving security, infrastructure, human capital development, grassroots governance and the welfare of residents.

He urged ministries, departments and agencies, local government councils and other stakeholders to ensure the immediate and effective implementation of the resolutions.
