Veteran Journalists in Kano Pledge to Uphold Media Ethics, Professionalism at Congress

The Kano League of Veteran Journalists KALVEJ in Kano State has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting ethical journalism, professionalism, and responsible media practice following a congress held at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano.

The congress brought together veteran journalists from across Kano State to discuss strategies for strengthening the journalism profession through capacity building, public enlightenment programmes, and adherence to professional ethics.

Speaking during the event, the Chairman of the association, Ahmed Aminu, said the Kano League of veteran Journalists was established to encourage responsible use of language in journalism, particularly in political reporting, where accuracy, fairness, and professionalism are essential.

According to him, the League is made up of experienced journalists who have spent many years working in various media organisations, including radio, television, and newspaper establishments.

Ahmed explained that members resolved to strengthen collaboration among media organisations by promoting information sharing, providing professional guidance, and expanding the League activities through the establishment of branches across Kano State.

He noted that the congress also resolved to discourage the use of inflammatory, misleading, or false language, especially during political activities, stressing that journalists have a responsibility to report the truth and uphold public confidence in the media.

“We are committed to ensuring that journalists use language responsibly and professionally.

The League will continue to promote truthful reporting and discourage unethical practices that could mislead the public,” he said.

The chairman further disclosed that the association plans to organise regular training programmes for journalists and media practitioners on the proper use of language in writing, broadcasting, and translation, in line with the guidelines of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and other relevant professional standards.

He expressed confidence that the initiative would contribute to improving the quality of journalism in Kano State and reinforce ethical reporting across all media platforms.
