The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano Sector Command, has dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting that a recent judgment of the Federal High Court in Kano stripped the corps of its statutory powers to operate on federal highways in the state.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Sector Public Education Officer, CRC Abdullahi Aliyu Labaran, said the clarification became necessary following publications and commentaries by legal practitioner, Barrister Abba Hikima, on the court’s ruling in a suit involving the FRSC.

The command stressed that while it respects the judiciary and remains committed to the rule of law, the judgment did not abolish its statutory mandate or prohibit it from carrying out lawful duties on federal highways across Kano State.

According to the statement, the FRSC derives its powers from the FRSC (Establishment) Act, 2007, which empowers the corps to enforce traffic regulations, prevent road crashes, rescue accident victims and ensure the safety of road users on federal roads nationwide.

It noted that its operational jurisdiction in Kano covers major federal highways, including the Kano–Zaria, Kano–Katsina, Kano–Maiduguri, Kano–Hadejia, Kano–Gumel and Kano Western Bypass routes, among others.

The command also expressed concern over social media posts allegedly encouraging motorists to confront or disregard FRSC patrol teams while carrying out their duties. It warned that such actions could incite resistance to lawful authority, undermine public order and endanger both road users and law enforcement personnel.

The FRSC further disclosed that it had identified procedural issues in the court proceedings, alleging that processes meant to present its defence were not considered before the judgment was delivered. It said it has already initiated legal steps to challenge the ruling at the Court of Appeal.

Pending the outcome of the appeal, the corps assured the public that it would continue to perform its statutory responsibilities professionally and in accordance with the law while respecting the rights of all road users.

The command urged motorists and residents to remain law-abiding, cooperate with duly identified FRSC personnel and disregard what it described as misleading interpretations of the court judgment circulating on social media.

Reaffirming its commitment to its core mandate, the FRSC said it would continue to promote road safety, save lives and ensure responsible road use in line with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
